Joy Rooney is a graphic designer, design educator and researcher. She studied graphic design at the University of the Arts, London. She has worked for a range of clients across cultural, research, NGO and retail sectors. She is currently undertaking PhD research, in the area of technology enhanced climate mitigation design architectures – coastal community based – informed by creative engagement with coastal visual culture, ethnography and study visits in the Arctic and the Antarctic Peninsula. She is also currently co-coordinating funded research projects supporting the development of Waterford Cultural Quarter – including a series of public design workshops, masterclasses and symposium – and is actively involved at community and civic level. She has contributed to a number of committees in WIT, steering groups and networks in the south east region of Ireland, Wales and the Interreg Atlantic Area. At other HE Institutes she has co-supervised postgraduate design students, acted as external examiner on design programmes and as peer panelist at School Reviews. She is year tutor on the BA (Hons) Design (Visual Communications) programme at WIT and lectures in Year 4 and Year 2. She has chaired that programme on two occasions. She has coordinated design student internships linked to that programme, together with Erasmus student exchanges. She was a founder member of ICOGRADA Next Generation in Ireland, (ICOGRADA – International Council of Graphic Design Associations, now International Council of Design, ico-D). With the kind support of professional design associations such as the Institute of Designers in Ireland, (IDI), the Design and Crafts Council of Ireland, (DCCoI) and Creative Ireland she has co-coordinated public design events, exhibitions and conferences. She has contributed to WIT programme development in the areas of design, multi-media, tourism and sustainable design. One characteristic of Rooney’s teaching involves collaboratively developing funded real world design projects. Her design students are currently working on funded projects with Fáilte Ireland, Waterford City and County Council, design studios based in Waterford, Dublin and London and have an opportunity to showcase their work in progress to delegates from the EU Creative Spirits Network. Some past funded projects have included collaborations with Enterprise Ireland, EU Axis 4 and the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. A project based on youth alcohol abuse awareness, funded by the Department of Education and Skills and the South Eastern Health Board, was subsequently developed and integrated into the C.S.P.E. national curriculum in Ireland. Regarding research and innovation development funding, as a member of various project teams she has contributed to securing over €270,000 funding for the Institute. She is a member of the Creativity and Culture Research Group (CCRG) at WIT.
